SUMMARY:Stuart Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, the Augusta County Historical Society program by Von Hardesty about the Pan Am Clipper stranded after Pearl Harbor will be rescheduled for a later date. However\, we know that many of you were looking forward to an historical program Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Smith Center. So\, Nancy Sorrells will present her program about Grandma Moses in the Shenandoah Valley. Please come out and enjoy a journey into Augusta’s artistic past \nIn the air\, over the Pacific\, on Dec 7 1941…  The Pacific Clipper’s Dramatic Story: The Compelling Tale Of A Passenger Aircraft & Crew And Their World-Ranging Adventures Just Trying To Get Home To The US \nOn December 7\, 1941\, a Pan Am passenger plane winging over the central Pacific learned that the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor\, where they had landed and embarked from the day before the attack. The adventures of the plane and its crew as they worked to escape attack and get home safely make up a little-known but compelling tale. The plane not only had to avoid Japanese aircraft\, it had to find safe places to land and refuel on what would become a perilous voyage home. \nVon Hardesty tells the tale of this plane\, named the Pacific Clipper.  Hardesty is a retired curator from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum and is the author of several books on early and wartime air adventures.  He is also currently a member of the ACHS Board of Directors. \nThe complete story of this amazing but largely forgotten adventure the unique world of air travel in the 1940s can be found in the book The Long Way Home: A Journey into History with Captain Robert Ford by Ed Dover published in 2010.  Go to www.longwayhome.com for more information. Or you can order the book from Amazon by following this link. \n \nThe talk will be 7 p.m. Thursday\, January 28\, in the second floor lecture room of the R. R. Smith Center for History and Art.  In the event of snow\, the lecture will take place Thursday\, February 4. \nThe event is free to ACHS members; students are $1 and non-members are $5.. \nAn Event Sponsored By The Augusta County Historical Society
